A great GPS for a great price

I changed my review of this GPS from five stars down to three stars for a few different reasons and I ended up taking the GPS unit back to the place I purchased it from (it was very hard to walk away from the $129 sale price) and purchased the TomTom XL340 TM.

The main reason I traded this unit in for a new one was the user interface. I completely understand that TomTom wants to create a simple user interface geared towards the 80% of people who want a simple and easy to understand GPS unit. On this, the XL 350 TM performs exceptionally well. However, if you want to really customize the GPS to do things for you, then you are out of luck because you cannot update very manypreferences in the unit. I like to tinker with the GPS unit and in the end I want ultimate control over what is on the screen and what information I can or cannot get. The 350 TM does not give you ANY leeway to set up the GPS in the exact way you want. If you see the words...

great gps
First of all the is am entry leve gps. My wife purchased it for me for fathers day. I used it and it works great right out of the box. I did delete the other languages (not needed for me), performed the LONG SLOW update that took about 1hr 45min <wireless connection>. Used it for work ---the traffic worked well. Please remember this is a no thrills gps gets you to point A---B. Other people that posted comments must not have read the product description. All the features that this gps has is right on TOMTOM's website. All the ADVANCED features that this gps doesn't have are on higher priced gps's. My wife only paid $129.99 from BestBuy a week before fathers day. This is a graet gps that is accurate and has a nice basic feature set. If you want a basic gps that has lifetime maps and traffic --- get this gps.
This XL 350TM is below my expectation
I am a user of TomTom GPS for many years. I have models GO910 and GO730. I bought XL-350TM because of its life time traffic and map updates and my good experience with their GPS. This is a lower end model that doesn't have mp3, video, FM, blue tooth etc. That's ok. I have better devices for that. I just need GPS feature. However after playing it for awhile, I am quite disappointed. Here is why:

1) The touch screen is difficult to use. It's very sluggish and unresponsive. It is so frustrating to brows the map.
2) There is no text instruction of the planned route. So you don't know which freeway/highway you are going to take unless you brows the map, which is so difficult.
3) There is no "shortest route" selection as alternatives. I agree that most time "shortest route" is pretty stupid. But users need to get an idea on the shortest way and plan route around it to balance speed and distance.
4) There is no itineray features. You spend all the time to plan a...

Garmin 376C
Good product, but the required maps should be sold with the hardware. Buyres may be misled on the real cost of the product without the map software and unlock codes. The fact that you need to purchase seperate map softwrae to get the unlock code to use the product is frustrating. City Navigator Map software is expensive and it contains strange anomolies in some regions of the maps. The ability to plan your route on your computer and download routes is a real plus for this GPS Unit. The integration of XM radio and Weather maps is a useful feature. Integration of XM raido eliminates the need for separate XM hardware. The Weather Map feature is interesting however too expensive to subscribe to unless you use it on a daily basis. As a hobby product it is too costly to subscribe to the weather feature.

Good with exceptions
Great having the XM feature and other options. Problems were with power cord (on third) and battery (dies deader than dead). Having to buy maps was a problem but great for both car/truck and boat.

It should get you there, but could do it better
I have owned the Garmin nüvi 850 for a couple of months, and have made several trips with it. I find it to be a mostly reliable GPS navigation unit, and recommend this product, with some reservations.

Its principal benefits are:

* Voice recognition works under most conditions, at least where substantial noise is not an issue. It is necessary to interact at the speed of the unit, waiting for your turn to speak, which is indicated both visually and audibly. The voice-activation remote control is a clever tool for accessing this feature, although placement of the remote on the steering wheel in such a way as to avoid accidental activations is difficult. Once voice recognition is active, the unit does not always understand commands on the first attempt, but I found that reducing fan speed on the vehicle's air conditioner (to reduce background noise) usually helps with this.

Durable, Reliable and pays for itself in the end.
Well my original monochrome Streetpilot was called back into action but I couldn't get new maps for it. That unit still works perfect after 10 years and is used frequently on canoe trips since it's waterproof to 3ft and can use batteries.

So I needed a GPS that could handle 100hrs of usage per week and have a replaceable battery with good routing and a music player that transmits to the car stereo would be nice.

After 4 months/1600hrs usage I have not been disappointed. Maps are great, it's found 895/900 addresses in the Chicago suburbs and never complained of sitting in the direct sun all day. I have a deep voice and the voice recognition works surprisingly well for me with the windows up in a noisy van. A nice feature would be able to increase the priority of highways, quite often it suggests me taking a more direct route that is slower, since traffic usually moves well over the posted speed. I am happy that the unit offers Flat Map Viewing with the option...
Worked Well . . . For Two Days
This GPS did everything it was advertised to do, including voice commands, etc., and did it all extremely well...for two days. On the third day it began freezing up immediately after initializing, and no amount of resetting or troubleshooting could resolve the problem. A call to Garmin customer support was met with a cautionary message that my wait for service would probably be 30 minutes or more. I have relied on Garmin products for years now. I am very disappointed to say I have had to send this one back for a refund.

SimpleSoft OEM replacement NAV/DVD/CD/Radio for Toyota Tundra
I installed this product in a 2011 Toyota Tundra SR5. My primary objectives were to add in dash navigation and back-up camera, and keep the OEM look. Everything that I have tested seems to work as advertised, but there are a few disappointments. Overall I think this head-unit is well worth the $500 price tag, and give this product 4 stars because I do like it. Here are my observations:

The display is crisp and bright. It has a matte finish making finger prints and glare less of an issue, and the touchscreen works well. Sunlight shining directly on the unit makes the screen difficult to see, but I have tinted windows so this is only an issue if my windows are rolled down. There is an option to have the on-screen menus displayed in blue or orange. When the truck lights are on, the two nobs and the words on the hard-buttons glow a red/orange color.

The back-up camera functionality works. The image displays before the head-unit is fully booted up. It takes 5 seconds...

Great looking replacement for my stock plain radio! All the wiring was simple and just pluged right in, very easy! The gps antenna does not need to go on the outside , mine mounted under the dash beneath the clock and works fine. The sound is a major improvement and the ability to play movies made the kids happy. However there is no option for satellite radio but other than that this thing rocks
Awesome
The delivery was quick, no damage. Installation was easy for my 2012 Tundra. What works-I don't have a tv so that hasn't been tested. CD changed same deal. Everything else works fine. There is a 30 second start up, and an additional 30 second for the GPS to load. The voice activation becomes a mute button for the system but the other buttons on the steering wheel works.
There is an audible sound when you tap the control pad while another program is working which does not really have any impact on performance. The biggest concern I have is that there is no manual. There are several other functions that I will not use like brake and tire controls.

Keychain GPS
I connected this gps to a blackberry 8703e from verizonwireless. The gps on the phone is not really a gps/ 1700 meters off using google maps or live moble. So I got this keychain gps and downloaded live search on my blackberry. The other gps keychain with microsoft trips is only used for the laptop so i didn't get that one. The mobile phone or blackberry uses the live search, which is free.

All you have to do is download the app and connect the bluetooth. Another thing is that the manual said to use 0000 as the passcode but it didn't work. My passcode was 1234. I also found out that while using a laptop bluetooth it doesn't use a passcode. 0000 won't let you connect.

On the blackberry and once connected to the bluetooth. If you go to live search - options- configure and choose gps20c/ spp s.

Compared to the blackberry gps, it more accurate- on the dot- than the blackberry gps which is sometimes 4 blocks away.

Is this the best GPS?
I've been using GPS systems for several years, and I'm always asked "what's the best GPS?" Unfortunately, that's not an easy question to answer. Just like there's no "best" car for everyone, there's no such thing as the "best" GPS.

That being said, this is a very fine GPS system, and one well worth checking out. I've owned two other Magellan systems in the past (a Roadmate 500 and a 750M), and the improvements in this system are wonderful. Excellent screen, clear even in full sun, easy to use - truly a "turn it on and go" setup. I've always been especially fond of the way Magellan announces upcoming turns - they are the only GPS that offers a incredibly accurate "bing-bong" sound right before the turn. The key word there is ACCURATE. Yes, Garmin has an upcoming turn tone, but more often than not, it's too early or too late to be effective. Magellan gets it right every time. Fantastic
Please note that this review covers the 4050. However, this unit is the same as the 4040 with two exceptions. On the 4040 both the voice command and traffic kit are optional, additional purchases.

Do you really need a GPS device?? If you are reading this review the answer is probably yes.

We have used them for a number of years and I'm now at the point where I wonder how we ever got along without one. No more trips to the computer for confusing Mapquest directions or frantic searches to find the car atlas after a wrong turn. Both facts leading to a significant reduction in "marital moments."

I could give many examples where GPS has "saved the day". Here is a recent one:

Well, I am not the GPS buff a lot of the reviewers seem to be, so you'll get this review from a regular guy. My only previous experience with GPS is renting a Garmin 330 with a rental car twice. My wife hated the Garmin, I liked it, but I was awe struck by the tecno-factor. So we went looking on-line to see what was available. We bought this unit specifically because it met my wife's criteria. She loved that it spoke street names and not just "turn right", "turn left". She also like that it was loaded with the AAA data. We have been AAA members for more than 35 years, so this feature appealed to us. If you are not a AAA member, then any GPS that has POI's is probably satisfactory for you. She also demanded one feature - she hates highways and wanted something that would provide the shortest distance without using highways. Highly Recommended
The iWay 500c is an incredible GPS that will rate at the top and at a lower price than anything with comparable features. You can read the specs yourself, what follows are my impressions of the unit.

The package includes 2 separate RAM-Mounts (one dash board and one windshield). I am new to RAM-Mounts and am very impressed with these excellent brackets. Additional RAM-mounts are available at a very reasonable price if you need them.

Also included are 3 power cords 1) automotive cigarette lighter, 2) a battery connection cable, 3) a 120v cable/cigarette female for indoor use. An external amplifying antenna is also included.

The screen is large and easy to read in all light conditions. There are 4 levels of back lighting. The touch screen and buttons work well and the interface is intuitive. The auto-zoom works great too.

The road selection software is good, but could use a little tweaking. My only complaint is that the "slider bar" to...

Exactly what I was looking for!
Finally, I have found the answer to our new vehicle purchase. We recently bought a new Ford Excusrion with all of the bells and whistles.... almost, anyway. As Ford doesn't have a decent Nav system available, and we didnt want to give up the in-dash 6 CD changer and steering wheel audio controls, we decided to go aftermarket on the nav. I came across this unit in Las Vegas and bought it, as it offered the turn-by-turn instructions and 3D mapping I was looking for. After a 6 hour drive back home, I am completely sold on the model. The unit is built very ruggedized, and looks as if it can take a lot of punishment. The navigation performed flawlessly and found a new route quickly after I decided I didn't want to go the way it told me to. The kit contains several mounting options.... a real plus! On the dash of the Excursion, the large 5" screen fits right in, without being obtrusive. I am looking into some mounting options, however. I will also be installing a seperate under-dash audio...
Great Navigator, Great Price, Best in Class
This little piece of gadgetry is absolutely wonderful. The large screen is the perfect size and is very clear and easy to read with a glance. It navigates great, you can switch from track up to north up to 3D view with a simple touch of the touch screen. It finds addresses and waypoints easily. It comes with all of the accessories made for it, including the external antennae. This fact makes it extremely adaptable and friendly. The voice directions are clear and correct. The price is great, especially if you shop around a bit. With its 10GB of MP3 I don't really use my 6 disc changer any more!

What I like: large color screen that can be read at a glance, lots of accessories, accuracy, Price. Certainly the best for the money.

What could be better: If the music player loaded wma as well as the MP3 and Ogg it now takes. If it had MGRS. If you could download waypoints from you computer so that you didn't have to add them individually.
