G.P.S. for RVs - Feature-Packed but not Problem-Free
When our new Magellan G.P.S. arrived, I charged it for four hours. Then we took it out for an hour's spin in the country to put it through its paces. We were both impressed and disappointed. Here's our experience with the Magellan RoadMate Pro 9165T:
PROS:
1. Quick connection to the satellite, so the device knew exactly where we were traveling (as long as it was working).
2. Large, super-easy-to-read screen. With a quick glance it's easy to see Speed Limits, location, ETA, and more.
3. Over Speed Limit Warning - if you exceed the speed limit, the device will issue an audible warning.
4. Feature-packed device - Find a camping site or RV park near to your present location; see points of interest by type of interest (for example, food, medical care); find a gas station quickly. The presentation is quite impressive.
5. Nice large virtual keyboard makes entering addresses easy and accurate.
CONS:...

Perfect for RV'ers!
The best way to test a GPS is on the road, so when I received the Magellan RoadMate RV9165T-LM 7-inch GPS I charged it all night long then took it out on the road. I have been wanting to try a restaurant I had seen on the Food Network called "Chicken Mary's". All I knew was that it was somewhere in Kansas, so after hooking up the GPS (which for me was very easy to do, I attached the "holder" by its suction cup to my windshield and then seated the GPS into the holder - the suction cup never came unattached from the window unlike my other GPS which would fall off quite often) I turned on the RoadMate and searched for a business. I just typed in Chicken Mary's and after searching it found the address and my trip was started!
The trip was 208 miles round trip to Chicken Mary's and back. The Amazon listing already lists a lot of the features this Roadmate has so I want to list the things I was most impressed with which were: the 7 inch size which is very easy to see when you need to...
Failure upon departure
The unit has a large screen and it is visually attractive. The printed manual is barely four pages covering nearly nothing. The mount is something that appears to be designed by NASA.
Problem: After charging it overnight I programmed our 275 miles RV trip and headed South on I-75. Thirty minutes later the screen went dark. Tried the on-off switch to not avail. Unplugged the unit from the cigarette lighter and plugged back in. It came back on but quickly it went off. After doing this several times I gave up.
Today I contacted Magellan and spoke with a customer service representative that I could barely understand a word she said. It took nearly an hour in the phone, and they are shipping a new unit.
