The BR-355 GPS Receiver can be utilized in a variety of applications which require GPS signals to be received and decoded in your Windows laptop or tablet PC, and for Mac users, their iBooks or Powerbooks. Compatible with most all NMEA compliant third-party software, the BR-355 is suitable for use in vehicle, marine and aviation navigation, as well as commercial and municipality applications such as fire trucks, police cars, buses, GIS data collection and much more. The BR-355's slim profile housing is completely waterproof and incorporates an active patch antenna for the highest level of GPS accuracy. The BR-355 requires either the USB or Serial RS232/PS2 cable set to function (sold seperately). Placement of the GPS receiver anywhere within the vehicle will usually get sufficient GPS signal reception, but in those rare occurrences when towering high-rises offer challenging satellite reception, simply place the BR-35r on the vehicle's roof (attaches with its built-in magnet) for improved reception. Since power is transferred through your PC's USB port or the keyboard port, depending on which cable set is connected. Data is also transmitted to the USB port or the RS232 port depending on which cable set is used.BR-355 Package Contents: BR-355 Serial GPS Receiver. CD-ROM (User Manual & GPS Info Test Utility)

ripped it apart
I got this unit because it was recommended for a Nikon GPS project. The instructions required this puck to be ripped up and the working innards to be relocated to a tiny project box along with Nikon's MC35 cable innards. I am happy to report that this is a snappy SIRF Star III device which now contributes to lat long and UTC time stamps on the EXIF data on my Nikon D300..

Amateur radio use
Good sensitivity, better than many other units. Works well in amateur radio APRS service. Does not have RF interference from 2-Meter band radio energy. Works very well.
Worked Great for Me
I bought this little guy to use with my Kenwood TM-D710A dual band ham radio. After cutting off the PS2 connector and soldering on a 1/8" headphone connector (and wiring up a 5V regulator in my car) I was good to go. This thing draws so little current, I just leave it on all the time and I don't have to wait for a lock time when I head off.
Works perfectly with my APRS setup and should work well for other things too. I will probably buy another on later this year for my high altitude balloon project.
I should also note that the receive did come with a wiring diagram with wire colors and pin locations called out, so you could use the connector or cut it off easily.
