Good, not great, can be "bricked" by update process
I found this device at a local Goodwill store, where Target evidently sends a bunch of its returned merchandise. For less than $20, I figured it had issue(s), but was worth a bet that I could get it working. I guessed right, but if I'd known how inexpensive these were new, I probably would have calculated differently. The unit had frozen in the midst of an upgrade. Looking at reviews and forums here and elsewhere, this seems to be a too-common problem with either this unit or the Content Manager software. I strongly suspect that buyers have been attempting the upgrade right out of the box, without heeding the admonition to have the unit fully charged first. I have to blame Magellan, though, for selling the device with just a 12V car charger. Since most cars don't supply power to their lighter plugs unless the ignition is on, getting this thing fully charged is anything but quick or convenient. After I got the device charged, though, the Content Manager software (downloaded to my...

UPDATE FREEZE UP FIX
UPDATE FREEZE
12/19/2011
Hey there, i, like many apparently, having this problem. i luckily found a gps site where someone posted a fix. and thank god it works.
temporarily turn off your anti virus and firewall. Then pull up your C drive, located in 'my computer'.
find this folder. it was located here for me: C:Usersyour User nameAppDataLocalTempContentManagerupdate (u will have to type this in, cause it doesnt show up in the initial list.)
I opened that folder and went down the list till i found 'setup'.
Then run setup.exe from that folder. a grey magellan wizard box opened up. follow instructions from there.
Prior to starting the update, hold the power off button until the GPS screen goes black and then power up the unit while not attached to the computer's USB port.
Then start the update, it will find the unit and complete. When the unit is detached from the PC, it will finish the...
Good support can make all the difference
Magellan uses a program called "Magellan Content Manager" to update software and maps. I have used it for my Magellan 1475Ts.
Content Manager could not "register" my 3120. I contacted support and got a canned reply, is it plugged in? Is your computer turned on? etc, etc. I said yes, yes, yes, please escalate.
Couple days later I got mail from a real person. He was knowledgeable, didn't treat me like an idiot, and he stuck with me to resolve all my issues.
He suggested I change the name of the 3120 in content manager. So instead of the default "Magellan Roadmate 3120" I changed it just "3120". The registration was successful! Go figure.
But then when I tried to download the software update, Content Manager failed, put up a lot of screwy messages, and bricked my GPS.
The guy at Magellan quickly explained how to unbrick my GPS (there are plenty of instructions how to do this on the Internet).
I asked him, how can I...
